Profiles of the MDBs

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

Established in 1991 the EBRD has the task to assist the Central and East European countries and the countries of the former Sovjet Union in their efforts to introduce a market economy and democracy by providing financing and technical assistance. The EBRD has been founded as a reaction to the down fall of the communist systems in Eastern Europe and the former Sovjet Union.A clear distinction to all the other MDBs except from IFC and MIGA is the concentration of the EBRD on the private sector. Today more than 80% of its activities are in the private sector. WB, IDB, ADB and AfDB are only 10 to 20 % active in the private sector. Their main activities are concentrated in the public sector.
